I run Saturday courses in Dorset on the following subjects:
This is a course designed to take the complete beginner through the basics of writing a short story. Students will be given the chance to write and gain constructive feedback on their work. A relaxed, informal course designed to inspire confidence. Next date Sat 8 March, 2008
This course will look in detail at what editors want and why they reject short stories. It requires students to bring along a previously rejected short story for criticism and advice. 2000 words max please. You will need to bring a short story to gain full benefit from this course. It is NOT for the faint hearted. But if you really want to know what went wrong, then this is the course for you. Next date Sat 23 February, 2008
Writing the twist in the tale story is an art. This course will show you how to write effective twists and how to avoid the current clichés and taboo subjects. Next date Sat 12 April, 2008
What do magazine editors want? This course covers approaching editors, researching markets and looks at fillers and accessible routes into journalism. During the day students will write a feature suitable for a chosen market. Next date Sat 17 May, 2008
Of course you can't learn everything about writing a
novel in a day, but you can learn a lot to maximise your chances of
success. This course is suitable for the novelist just starting out and
also for writers who have completed or are part way through their first
novel. We will look at main characters, setting and plot. What you need to
know before you start, and that all important first page.
Next date Sat 21 June, 2008
All of the above courses are run on an informal and interactive basis. Writing is fun as well as work and all my courses reflect this. All courses run from 10:00 to 4:00 at Kinson Community Centre, near Bournemouth and cost £35.00 inclusive. Please email for a course sheet and dates. Please specify which course/s you are interested in. Praise for Della Galton:“I have attended many of Della
Galton's courses and workshops on creative
writing. I find them inspirational and totally addictive. Her support and
knowledge is unsurpassed and invaluable to every student of fiction
writing...” "Della's thoughtful and incisive tuition, together with her constant encouragement and support, have been inspirational. Not only that - it has led to publication!" Gwen Cremin
"Della is a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. A
workshop article of mine from one of her Saturday classes was published in The
Lady. A short story of mine from a workshop in another of her classes
has been accepted by People's Friend. Success, after years of trying.
Thank you, Della."
Mo Turner
"I have been attending Della's Creative Writing classes for five years now and not only have they been fun, but during this time, I have had stories published in the 'Sexy Shorts' series (Scary Shorts and Saucy Shorts), articles published in magazines and been a prize winner for a short story competition run by 'Writers' News' magazine.
Della's teaching methods, her constructive criticism and comments have been
invaluable to me as a writer."
